Wise Wombat checks prop custody across possession, handoff, loss, damage, use, and unexplained reappearance.
Issue guide
Prop continuity mistake
How to track important objects that are lost, hidden, transferred, damaged, duplicated, or recovered.
Symptoms
What it looks like
These are common signals that the manuscript may need a focused continuity review.
- An object appears in the wrong person's hands.
- A damaged object works later without repair.
- A hidden object is used without retrieval.
Cause
Why it happens
Prop mistakes appear when object scenes are cut, action is rearranged, or the same object gains new plot importance late in revision.
Fix
Practical repair path
The author still decides what is true in the story. The useful move is to review evidence and choose a canonical version.
- List who has the object after each scene.
- Add the missing transfer, repair, duplicate, or retrieval.
- Update stakes if another character should notice the object moving.
Example
Tiny example
A phone is thrown into the river, but the same phone receives a call in the next chapter.
