Character knowledge

Before and after: a character knows too much

A demo showing how to fix a scene where a character knows information they have not received.

Example

Before, finding, after

The revised version is one possible author decision, not an automatic rewrite.

Before

Chapter 11: Niko is away when the map is decoded. Chapter 12: Niko warns the crew not to trust the blue harbor marked on the decoded map.

Finding

Niko acts on information that the manuscript has not shown him learning.

After

Chapter 12: Niko studies the decoded map on Mara's desk, then warns the crew not to trust the blue harbor.

Why it works

What changed

The added transfer of knowledge keeps the warning while restoring cause and effect.

  • Identify who learns the information first.
  • Add a handoff, overheard moment, or private discovery.
  • Check later dialogue for knowledge that still arrives too early.
